Earthquake Notification Service
The Earthquake Notification Service (ENS) sends users free email or text messages when earthquakes occur.
Users customize ENS messaging based on where and how largethe earthquake is. That might be:
- Large earthquakes anywhere,
- Moderate earthquakes in the U.S., or
- Earthquakes of any size in a region of interest.
Users can have multiple email addresses. ENS can also text your cell phone if your carrier
supports email-to-text functionality.
ENS messages provide a short text summary plus a link to more
details.

News and Notifications
-
Shaking at Points - a new message type that reports shaking
intensity estimates from ShakeMap for points of interest to the user.
-
Earthquake Notification Service can also deliver messages summarizing PAGER, ShakeMap,
ShakeAlert®, and Aftershock Forecast:
- PAGER - Estimated earthquake impact on people and property.
- Aftershock Forecast - Expected number of aftershocks and the probability of larger earthquakes. Available for larger earthquakes in the U.S. and its territories, and selected consequential international earthquakes
- ShakeMap - Message that a ShakeMap has been made, and the peak estimated shaking intensity.
- ShakeAlert® - Message that a new ShakeAlert® earthquake early warning system performance report is available.
Each message is sent separately, so one earthquake can generate up to five notifications. Current users will continue to receive Event messages that fit their applicable magnitude and region settings. - Inactive users: Some ENS account holders have no method on file to send notifications. We have no way to contact you! To keep your ENS account, please log in and add your email or SMS information. Accounts with no contact information will be removed.
